About Me

Bio: Alida Thorpe
~~~
My camera, from my first Pentax SLR to my current Nikon D300, has always been required gear for my journey through life. I love being outdoors and being a participant in my natural surroundings. My other pursuits of boating, beaching, fly-fishing, scuba-diving and traveling fit perfectly with my love of photography.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn and moved to Long Island as a young adult.
I love where I live!
Since my retirement from a lengthy career in education, I have been able to devote more time to my photography.
Long Island has so many beautiful beaches and parks with abundant wildlife.
It’s just a wonderful place for taking photos! I enjoy sharing my images on the web.
Visit my blog, Long Island Woman to see and read just why I enjoy my Long Island. My photos on the web are of Long Island, New York City, as well as my international travel adventures.
Currently, I am one of the featured photographers for LongIsland.com where my images and articles can be seen on the Long Island Blog.
My images have appeared in New York Magazine, in addition to the Town Plannercalendar, and Long Island's Travel Host Magazine and VOX Hamptons, Spring 2008.
My photo titled "from the bow" was the program cover for the Perth, Australia International Boat Show.
Non-profit groups have used my photos:
Long Island’s ‘2daywalk for cancer’ , the ‘Friends of Connetquot’ ,
and American Rivers.org, are just a few.
Interior designers use my images for decorating residential homes and corporate offices. Some of my work is in print on canvas. I work closely with the designers to help select and prepare the images for each home and environment.
I am a member of Nature and Wildlife Photographers of Long Island.
As a member of NWPLI, I have had my photos on exhibit at the Long Island Fire Island Lighthouse and the Borghese Winery in Cutchogue.
